CORAL REEF BAR AND GRILL, Balfour Town, Salt Cay

Located next to Deane’s Dock, this small restaurant is Salt Cay’s only Oceanside café. You can’t miss it as it’s painted bright blue and green. Breakfast consists of standard North American fare: omelettes, French toast, eggs, and cereal. The lunch and dinner menus offer grilled chicken and burgers and there’s the fresh catch of the day. Also on offer are island specialties, including conch and lobster (when in season), home-cut fries, and delicious curry dishes. While dining, you’ll have a chance to get to know some of the locals. On most Sundays the island turns out for chicken and baby back rib night accompanied by live music. There’s a full-service bar to help you enjoy the night. This restaurant accepts credit cards. Porters Island

PORTER’S ISLAND THYME, Balfour Town, Salt Cay

The owners Porter Williams and his wife, Haidee have been traveling back to Salt Cay for over 20 years. Their love of the island resulted in the creation of Porter’s Island Thyme in 1999, and is now affectionately seen of as the place to meet near the dock. The bistro offers great cuisine, blending an Asian influence with local and international ingredients. Breakfast here is superb and consists of eggs Benedict, Belgian waffles, and breakfast burritos. On the lunch and dinner menus you’ll find different seafood and meat selections. In the evening you’ll discover beach BBQ’s, Texas hold’em poker, hermit crab racing, karaoke, or Nintendo Wii bowling which is accompanied by a nightly selection of tapas during happy hour. There’s also Wednesday Wing Night, Friday-night pizza, and the amazing Lobster Mania on Thursdays (when in season). There’s a small shop with gifts and tourist information. PAT’S PLACE, South District, Salt Cay

Patricia Simmons, an Island native, can give you a lesson in the medicinal qualities of her garden plants and periwinkle flowers, as well as provide outstanding local cuisine for a very reasonable price in her welcoming Salt Cay home. This is Turks and Caicos home cooking at its very best. On the menu are conch fritters and cracked conch – there’s chicken-and-chips for lunch and for dinner, steamed grouper or red snapper with peas and rice. Pat only cooks with a reservation and as with most places in Salt Cay, you must place your order by 2 pm for your dinner order. Beer and wine are offered with the evening meal, and payment is by cash only. Pat also has the Island Shop on Victoria Street, a small grocery selling the essentials.
